After three years of work with a broad range of Action Lab Anchor Partners, such as Citizen Action of New York, For the Many, Popular Democracy, NY Communities for Change, CUFFH, Make the Road NY and many others, we worked closely with State Senator Julia Salazar and State Assembly Member Gabriella Romero to introduce the Tenant Power Act.

The Tenant Power Act (TPA) is a bold and innovative legislative initiative to build power for tenants. The legislation: 1) creates new transparency and disclosure requirements to prevent landlords from hiding behind complex corporate entities, 2) requires landlords to negotiate in good faith with their tenants or face severe penalties, and 3) catalyzes a $50 million dollar investment in new tenant organizing throughout New York State.

Read more about the TPA in this feature in The Real Deal.

For too long, landlords and the real estate companies have disregarded and mistreated New York tenants and families, and the Tenant Power Act will balance the scales of power and promote tenant organizing at scale.

Op-Ed | Building a city that values home-based providers

Years ago, New York City took its first steps toward expanding public child care with the creation of Pre-K and 3-K. Those investments changed lives. But as the city expanded access, too many family child care providers — the home-based educators who have long anchored their communities — were left behind.
