The Housing Crisis and The Homes Act: A Path Forward
We are in the midst of a massive housing crisis. Families are forced to choose between rent and medicine, homelessness is at an all-time high, and many are living in unsafe, deteriorating apartments. Private equity giants and corporate investors are buying up entire neighborhoods, treating our homes as profit machines while we suffer the consequences.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
The government can step in to repair and build beautiful, public, permanently affordable housing, while creating hundreds of thousands of good-paying union jobs. We can ensure that Black and Brown communities, long excluded from quality housing, can grow roots and live safely. Young people can save for their futures, and seniors on fixed incomes can age in peace.
The Homes Act is a bold program designed to transform housing for the public good. It ensures that everyone—whether a teacher, a farmworker, or someone on a fixed income—has access to green, affordable housing outside the private market, while also generating hundreds of thousands of good, green union jobs.
